I want to tell you about a group of women — the women that I have been working with at RECLAIM for the past 3 years. For those of us that have been there for that period of time it’s been such a journey. Every single one of us has been exploring ourselves, exploring what we care about, what we’re angry about, what we’re passionate about, but also really supporting each other to do that. I don’t think I cared as much about being a woman before I joined RECLAIM. I had my frustrations about society and women but I don’t think I was as knowledgeable or empowered before I started the journey of working with them. It wasn’t even really about the work that we were doing; the work we were doing was different, it wasn’t focused on feminism. It is focused on equality and injustices in society. The experience of working with these women has been so changing — who I was three years ago is definitely not the person I am today. I know myself better, I know what I care about regarding my identity, and they do too. For example there is a woman that I work with called Becca, who has supported me so much on my views about feminism, but I have also supported her to be less angry at men. We discuss that a lot. Or my friend Rachel, who has helped me explore my racial identity — but hopefully I have given her space to deal with issues she faces because of her class. There are just so many women who have pushed me, who have challenged me on how I have been or how I have behaved at times — this has definitely made me grow as a person. I feel like every woman who steps into the organisation is incredible.
RECLAIM is a youth leadership and social change organisation.
