Many women have inspired me over the years, of course. I love films, and I love Jeanne Moreau. She died last year. Her most interesting film was Jules and Jim, it’s a classic and everyone must watch it! That film really inspired me, as did her life and her friendship with Marguerite Duras. Marguerite was a great feminist writer in the west. She was very political and supported Mitterrand, who at the time was an underground communist, a socialist. She joined that movement and had quite a risky life. But her passion for a man was too strong... She couldn’t sort out her independence as a woman, strangely. She didn’t have enough time to sort this part of her life out. All her books reach that point of view. Zen buddhism was very close to her way of thinking, but not quite. She was born too early, I think.
