I find it quite difficult to pinpoint just one woman to talk about. I think that everyone that you meet in life is an inspiration of some measure, whether they are in hardship, or if they a strong character, they all have a story to tell. It just depends on what story you want to take from them. The immediate women that come to mind are my grandmother, my mother, my yoga teacher… Should I talk about someone I have met on my yoga journey? I suppose my inspiration is my soul. I’ve been listening to and watching women, and studying myself as a woman. I’ve been trying to work out what all the thought processes about feminist equality actually mean. Realistically there’s no answer for me because I’m still on a journey — I don’t know what it is that makes me feel so strongly that we should be equal to men. I don’t know what it is that makes me feel that we shouldn’t be spoken to in a certain way. Similarly, I don’t know what it is that makes certain women think that it’s ok to be led — and by that I mean in my culture, where I’ve seen women’s lives be very much led by men. I’ve seen this in other cultures too, while travelling — there are lots of similarities with this dynamic across the globe. I think I’m not so deferential to men, and I think it needs to change that women anywhere are deferential to men. There are a lot of women speaking out about this but until every woman demands equality, the change we want to see will be held back by certain limiting beliefs in women themselves. This is their soul telling them that this is right.
So my inspiration is a spirit, or a soul somewhere, that I haven’t found.
[Do you see your soul as being separate from you?]
No, I believe my soul to be ‘me', but it’s not a tangible ‘me’ or even a tangible thing. It’s something that comes to you as an energy, or a thought, or a feeling. It’s not a physical thing that you can see or touch. People might think that that sounds a bit crazy, but if you stop and listen to what your head will be telling you, and what your heart tells you, then you will be able to speak the truth. If everyone had the same instinct and stopped and listened, then they would probably come to the same conclusion. That actually what some of these women have been shouting about, for women’s rights, or equality within the genders… they would all come to the same conclusion, that we are all as one, no one is higher, no one is lower, we all are equal.
